are ye listening RTE, ye better…?!!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

I watched the rugby on Saturday. I cried like a little boy. I was with my Dad. We have that Irish son and Father kind of ‘howya’ – ‘grand’ kind of relationship. The normal kind. We cried like little boys. My Mom was with us. While the entire pub screamed at the television my Mam came out with all the great one liners like…

that man just hurt the other man…. that’s not fair

as grown men fell to their knees...

as grown men fell to their knees...

...whilst a nation cried

...whilst a nation cried

After the rugby. A momentous occasion for so many reasons and after 61 years since we last won the grand slam…. I was going out to celebrate and that was that… NO!! but it wasn’t because the greatest thing since Barry McGuigan and Steve Collins was fighting. I went to Killians in the Naul to watch it. Yet more growing men crying at the television… some still in their rugby Jerseys… some like me had spent a day with their folks watching history only my Grandfather would have seen…

The twitter tag cloud explains it well as the ref blew the whistle…

I called my Dad the next day. It was Mothers Day…

Did you… yeah… I know… Did ye see the bit where… me too… ye what… it’s probably on RTE later… It would have to be after a day like that for the little nation of IRELAND!!!!!!!!

I watched the 9 o’clock news… a little special came on after in the sports section. It showed ‘OUR BOYS’ coming home. It showed Dawson Street to capacity. It showed Bernard Dunne blessing himself in the corner… his Mam in tears… a nation and entire nation had been brought to tears…

What did RTE do… you guessed it – they put George Lee and his depressing documentary  on. A nation brought to tears again…. Get it right RTE we pay your wages…. are ye listening to logic. Ye better…?!!

UPDATE: i don’t like depressing stuff. I don’t therefore like George Lee. RTE could have left him off until another year. However… that DID NOT take away from an amazing weekend/ day/ night that I had spent with my parents, my Father and Mother and later my friends. It DID NOT take away from something that will be noted as historic. I was so proud. I am so proud. I did shed a tear[s]… But like anyone else I also wished Georgie & the brains behind the series was the ring with Bernard… I dont take it that seriously. Like twitter I can turn off the television… I did

UPDATE #2: I am not George Lee…. [rick]

and a nation goes to tears again...
