With lots of thanks to Movies.ie, I won tickets to the Irish premier of the new romantic comedy, The Proposal. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, The Proposal follows the story of Margaret (Bullock), a high flying executive for a publishing house in New York city, and Andrew (Reynolds) her over-worked assistant. When it comes to light that Margaret’s visa has run out and that she is about to be deported back to Canada, she is inspired to tell her bosses and consequently the Department of Immigration that she is engaged to Andrew. The movie follows the duo as they visit his family in Alaska for a weekend to tell them about the engagement, the family’s welcoming her with open arms, the warm fuzzy feeling of being accepted into a family, etc.
It’s a simple, enjoyable tale of boy meets girl, boy hates girl, girl hates boy, boy and girl are thrown into a situation outside their normal comfort zone, girl sees boy in new light and vice versa, love grows…aww. To be honest it reminded me an awful lot of While You Were Sleeping, a 1995 romantic comedy also starring Sandra Bullock, and also involving her being accepted, under false pretenses into a large, crazy, loving family, a wedding that doesn’t happen, followed by a real get together with the object of her affections. In fact there is one scene, at the altar, that they could have cut straight from While You Were Sleeping. But I loved WYWS, so no complaints here
Here’s a trailer to While You Were Sleeping – the similarities are huge!
The Proposal is a funny, clever, uncomplicated love story, a great movie to see with your girlfriends as I did. Leave your worries at the door, stock up on popcorn and chocolate and have fun…oh and enjoy one of my favourite characters in the movie, Andrew’s Gammy (grandma), played by Betty White (aka Rose from the Golden Girls)
