Grunge band, SOUTH and ‘The Making of Insula’

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Kilkenny grunge band, South are due to release their first album ‘Insula’ on Friday next week, 31 July in Whelans.

South came together in June 2008, and went on to win the Hype Entertainment Battle Of The Bands just three months later. Following the competition the band underwent a line-up change; founding members Thomas Donoghue (Guitar/Vocals) and Ken Farrell (Bass) were joined by Alan Dawson (Drums/Vocals).

The trio spent several months writing and rehearsing material for their debut album which was recorded in the Mill Studios in April 2009 as part of their Battle Of The Bands winnings. They were joined in the studio by film maker/photographer Ross Costigan, who shot and produced the three part mini-series ‘The Making of Insula’. No stranger to the Kilkenny film making scene, Ross recently directed four episodes of Mycrofilm’s webcom ‘Vultures’.

South have a great sound going on, I could listen to the two songs on their MySpace page all day. You can see in the videos how well they work together.

The videos also give a little insight into what it is like to record an album, the amount of time and work and long  hours that go into it but the lads seem to have enjoyed every minute.

You can read more about the filming and editing processes that Ross went through to get this episode together here.

I’ll post Episodes 2 and 3 during the week, before Friday’s big release :)
