Fancy a bit of opera in the open during lunch on Thursday?
If a bit of classical singing is your thing, and you’re near the Civic Offices on Wood Quay, Dublin City Centre this Thursday lunchtime, come on down to Opera in the Open.
Now in its tenth year, Opera in the Open returns with five free performances of well-loved operas each Thursday at 1:00 pm from 6th August through to September 3rd.
Lovely way to see some brilliant singers and some fine performances during your lunch. It’ll be at the amphitheatre at the back of the Dublin City Council offices. The performances will be:
6 August – ‘The Magic Flute’ by Mozart
13 August – ‘Giulio Cesare’ by Handel
20 August – ‘Don Pasquale’ by Donizetti
27 August – ‘Hansel und Gretel’ by Humperdinck
3 September – ‘Idomeneo’ by Mozart
The Magic Flute is a lovely piece. You have Prince Tamino, tryng to rescue Pamina, Princess of the Night and having to go through a hell of a time to do so. It’s a firm Mozart fvourite and you can get of a taste of it with this trailer from the Kenneth Branagh film:
From the press release:
‘Opera in the Open’ is an initiative of Dublin City Council Arts Office as part of its remit to make the best of art and culture accessible to all in the city.
The performances feature Janyce Condon, Stephen Fennelly, Mary Flaherty,Victoria Massey, Simon Morgan, Niall Morris, Sandra Oman, Donna Gallagher and Liz Ryan. Musical direction is by David Wray, stage direction by Niall Morris and narration is by Ted Courtney.
“This is a milestone year for ‘Opera in the Open’, ten years on it is going from strength to strength,” says Jack Gilligan, Art Officer, Dublin City Council. “We had record numbers of over 1,000 attending individual performances last year and while you might expect people who work or live in the city to attend, we have been surprised and delighted by the number who make the performances the reason for a visit to the city and travel long distances to get here”.
Admission is free, which is nice. I hope we get good weather!
