TV Trailer: The Pacific
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009I know I usually only post about books, but this is too big not to be shared. It’s the new trailer for Steven Speilberg-Tom Hanks production The Pacific, which may as well be the follow-up to the awesome Band of Brothers.
The budget was allegedly $100 million and is based on the memoirs of two former US marines about the war against Japan over the Pacific during World War II.
It won’t be on TV until next year (Sky has the UK rights), but already I cannot wait…

Looks like it will be on HBO here early into the new year, then in Australia where most of it was filmed, and will be on Sky in the spring of 2010. It should be a very good [10 part] series. The United States Marine Corps lost nearly 5,000 on Iwo Jima, and nearly 4,000 in the Marianas. The invasion of Okinawa cost the lives of nearly 3,000 Marines and nearly 4,000 in the US Navy. Okinawan women jumped off the cliffs into the sea with their young ones in their arms, thanks to Japanese propaganda regarding the Marines.
Looking forward to this. I watch Band of Brothers at least once a year (in the same fashion that people read Lord of the Rings once a year). I love WW2 stuff generally, and really hope this one works. It’s pretty much the same “top dogs” but it is a shame that the BBC isn’t involved this time. They seemed to have done most of the casting for the original series…
I’m excited about this show. The production team are top notch and they have some interesting actors. Most notably Isabella Lucas (last seen as an alluring Decepticon in Transformers 2), William Sadler (who was fantastic as the Sheriff in Roswell) and Joseph Mazzello (who played wee Tim in Spielberg’s Jurassic Park and Lost World).
Kevin: The Beeb helped to cast some of the British soldiers (and Damian Lewis), and since this is about the American war in the Pacific, I don’t think they’ll be missed as much in that department. However, their production qualities may be missed. (I hope not though)
Niall: I couldn’t believe it when I saw little Timmy was in this. Priceless!
