Christmas coming to Dublin…tomorrow?
Saturday, November 14th, 2009
The Christmas lights are going on in Dublin – tomorrow! The lovely Miriam O’Callaghan from RTÉ’s Prime Time will be there with her three year old son Jamie to switch on the lights at 4.00pm on Henry Street. Will it even be dark by four o’clock? I hope so!

The Dublin City Business Improvement District are having a family fun day in the Henry Street area beginning at 11am to celebrate the turning on of the lights.
Join story teller Susie Minto in the Jervis Shopping Centre, while Conor Lambert’s Custard Pie Puppet Company will entertain with live interactive puppet shows in the Ilac Shopping Centre; both part of the BIDs for KIDs Winter Programme. At 1.00pm Santa will arrive by horse drawn carriage and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the larger than life Christmas characters who will be roaming the streets. On street carollers will fill the air with traditional renditions of Christmas classics. The FM104 Roadhog will broadcast live from Henry St on the day, giving you the chance to pick up lots of goodies. Join Miriam O’Callaghan at 3.00pm in the Ilac Shopping Centre where she will be reading Christmas stories until 3.20pm before moving over to the Jervis Shopping Centre for another 20 minute story telling session. At 4.00pm the count down to Christmas in the city will officially begin when Miriam O’Callaghan switches on the festive lights.
Seven more streets have been added to the list to be decorated with lights this year thanks to Dublin City BID. So in addition to the usual streets, there will also be pretty lights illuminating Drury Street, Cathedral Street, Coppinger Row, Capel Street, South King Street, Talbot Street and Moore Street!
Dublin City BID have made the ‘big switch’ so Bord Gáis will be providing the power for all the lovely lights this year. All proceeds from tomorrow’s fun day will be going to the ISPCC so it’ll be a great family day out for a good cause.
Oh yes, the Christmas season is upon us now.

I knew it was Christmas when I saw bottles of Coke with santa on them.
Time to bite the bullet and buy presents
Christmas can feck right off until December where it belongs.
The lights have been on in Amsterdam about 2 weeks now. Dublin is so slow!!
Kevin unfortunately I think you might be right
Archie, if I could put it all off and hide til December I would. But any year I have done that, Christmas kind of passes me in a blur because I’m still in denial
Niall -really 2 weeks? Wow. Though I suppose directly after Halloween most shops got their decorations up.
So…is it Christmas now?
A week late but Miriam and her son did a great job.
