Broken Spine #20 (with competition)

Another load of BS, another competition. This week we have one copy of 2fm DJ Jenny Huston’s new musical tome In Bloom – Irish Bands Now to give away. Thanks to Emma over at Entertainment Architects for the prize. It’s marvellous!

Recommended Reading #18 – In Bloom – Irish Bands Now

Jenny Huston - In BloomIn Bloom – Irish Bands Now is the perfect stocking filler. Luckily it has come out just in time for Christmas! It is a wonderful collection of profiles and interviews with fifteen of Ireland’s top acts. There’s all the major players: Bell x1, Mundy, Fight Like Apes, Lisa Hannigan, as well as some upcoming artists such as Kilkenny’s R.S.A.G. and And So I Watch You From Afar. In addition to these excellent in-depth interviews, there’s also a foreword from Ireland’s only musical Oscar winner, Glen Hansard. The foreword itself is inspired, and starts the book perfectly by asking “What is a band?”

Each act is beautifully captured in fantastic photos, and in the profiles themselves, Jenny Huston reallycaptures the feel of band loyalty and fraternity. Take her description of Bell x1 for example, opening “Bell X1 are intelligent, creative, gifted musicians and the band is one of the most successful and best-loved in the country. When they are together they joke, slag and finish each other’s sentences, making it great fun to watch them bounce off each other.”

It’s this kind of insight that makes this book essential. Huston is right there with the artists, and not just watching them from afar. (See what I did there?) I’d recommend you buy it for yourself, and everybody else this Christmas. Unless you win it in the competition below, of course…

Jeny Huston’s In Bloom – Irish Bands Now was released on Friday, and is available for €20 from Currach Press. Also, every copy purchased online comes signed by the author.

In order to win a copy of the book, we want our readers to let us know which of the acts profiled in the book is their favourite, and why? It could be a simple “Bell x1. I love their lyrics” or maybe something more thoughtful or profound! Check out the full list of acts here www.inbloom.ie

The competition will be open until next Monday. Good luck!

    What a lovely prize 🙂

Not to be completely unoriginal here, but my favourite band there IS Bell X1, and it IS because of the lyrics (the fact that I would happily listen to Paul Noonan singing the phonebook to me is just a small bonus)..

it’s the way they manage to capture just that fleeting little moment in time, in such a poignant way – tkae Slowset for example:

    “What do you say
When she’s in your arms and you’re going round in those circles…
When both of you know that you’ve risen to the occasion…
When her friend comes along and you know that she’s been rescued…
When you’re eternal flame has been drowned by her…
    Purple Rain”

I mean, who hasn’t had a cringeworthy moment like that, albeit when you were 12 in the school hall at your first disco?

and listen to “West of Her Spine” so lovely…. or the sentiment behind Blue Rinse Baby…

There are so many little moments like that, so beautifully captured in a few words the lyrics for once (for me) take precendence over the music.

.. Okay, I’m a huge fan, always have been, right since the Juniper days soI’m slightly biased, I could go on all night, at length, but I won’t.

    Please can I have a book?! 😀

Will definitely be purchasing a copy either way, my Christmas pressie to me!
