On the weekend of 27-29 August there will be a new festival in town – Kilkenny will host it’s first ever gay pride festival, Out For The Weekend. With the intention of promoting inclusion and diversity in all communities through a weekend of fun, the production team behind Out For The Weekend includes gay, lesbian and straight people. They are promising a mixture of “a whole host of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight-related activities”.
The line-up is ever increasing but so far includes: karaoke, drag shows featuring Joanna Ryde, a cheesy 90’s disco, a city walkabOUT, gay cinema, a “Sausage Fest” BBQ, a number of DJ’s and live performances from Trumpets of Jericho, Ex Drummer, Moses Moorhouse & The Dinosaur Palace, Lobster Socks, the Thinny Whites and Classic Gas.You can check the most up to date line-up and the actual time schedule on their website here.
The festival is being independently run with support from many local businesses and sponsors. To support families as well as adults, there will be an ‘all ages’ music gig on the Saturday afternoon in Set Theatre. The festival organisers are still welcoming sponsors and are also hoping to secure accommodation packages from hotels and B&B’s (if anyone is interested you can read more here). Any businesses interested can contact them through their website. The organisers are also hoping to educate and raise awareness of issues affecting the gay community in Ireland. Groups such as BeLonG To, TranSE, Marriage Equality, LGBT Diversity and the HSE are actively supporting the festival and will be present throughout the weekend offering information and advice.
Tickets for the various shows are quite reasonable at €5.00 per event and are on sale in Rollercoaster Records on Kieran Street, Kilkenny. However there is also a festival pass which will get you into all events over the weekend for just €15.00.
Thanks to the OFTW team we have two of these festival passes to give away to our lucky Culch.ie readers – yay! To be in with a chance to win a festival pass, just tell us in comments below the names of two of the acts who will be performing at Out For The Weekend. Simple!
(Hint: you can read the list here)
Competition is open until Saturday 21st August 2010.
