Dundalk based Blind Pilots formed as a quartet of sixteen year old schoolboys with aspirations of making atmospheric indie-pop with a nostalgic tinge. Now they are 21 as comparatively auld fellas at the age of 21. They released their AA single (that’s Double A I think) in The Spirit Store, Dundalk, Co. Louth, on Saturday 28 August. Following on from both positive audience reaction on the night and positive online reaction Blind Pilots have decided to make the two tracks Rosé Cheeks and Cocktail available for free for the foreseeable future.
Speaking on behalf of the band drummer Gavin Murray said “We don’t feel it right to put a price on tag an audio file which we want as many people as possible to hear. Also it’s a token of our gratitude to our fans, many of which have stood by us for a long time.”
They play The Stables, Mullingar, Westmeath on Friday 17 September and Bakers, Limerick (with Fighting with Wire) on Monday 27 September.
And if you want to try before you download, here they are…
MGMT play the Olympia Theatre, Dublin on Thursday 16 September and Friday17 September. They have also have unveiled the video for their new single ‘Congratulations’ due for release on eleased on the Monday 27 September. Directed by Tom Kuntz, it’s a rather surreal trek through the desert for Ben Goldwasser, Andrew VanWyngarden and a sickly, vulture-like creature. Tom’s been interviewed about making the video and the creature.
Taylor Mac who does gender-bending ukulele-playing performances was described as ‘Ziggy Stardust meets Tiny Tim’. Being a queen who can take a hint, he has decided to write and perform an original conversation about the comparison, while singing Tiny Tim songs and David Bowie’s entire Ziggy Stardust album. It promises to be a concert unlike any other. Which may not be a good thing. However he performs as part of the Absolut Fringe Factory at The Grand Social, Dublin on Saturday 11 September at 9pm.

They emerged from former band Wives in 2005, to become No Age, part of the DIY art-punk scene in LA. No Age have risen from sweaty basement shows and art galleries to having their songs blast off the walls of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), to performing at unconventional spaces both close to home and abroad.
The soul-folk-glam ensemble from New York The Duke & The King play The Academy 2, Dublin on Tuesday 19 October. The group founded, produced, and created by Simone Felice and Robert Bird Burke, featuring the Simi Stone and Reverend Loveday, and like any travelling theatre troupe there’s bound to be a growing cast of bewitching characters on the night.
Kylie (Minogue if you insist) has her ‘Aphrodite – Les Folies Tour 2011′ visiting Ireland on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 March 2011 in The O2 (aka the Point), Dublin. There is a limited edition ticket which puts yo in the “splash zone”. Given that the pack an actual backpack) includes a waterproof and a towel, it sort of suggests that a portion of the audience are going to be getting themselves wet. And that suggests that expensive electronics, like fancy cameras or cameraphones, shouldn’t be brought in to that area.
It’s been three years since Klaxons burst onto the music scene with the influential Mercury award-winning album Myths Of The Near Future. Now they are back with the follow up. Produced in LA by US rock legend Ross Robinson (Sepultura, Slipknot, At the Drive In, The Cure) and written over the course of a three year long musical journey, “Surfing The Void” the alternative rock record is out now. Champ is the second full length album from Toronto’s Tokyo Police Club. They first hit their stride back in 2006 when, straight out of high school, their hyperactive mini-album A Lesson in Crime came from nowhere to prove one of the year’s most refreshing releases. The surprise success of A Lesson in Crime led to relentless touring through the entirety of 2006/07, with appearances anywhere and everywhere, taking in festivals from Coachella to Glastonbury, two TV appearances Letterman and, bizarrely, an appearance on an episode of Desperate Housewives. They are gearing up again to play The Academy, Dublin on Friday 5 November.
Following the release of their new album, Latin, Toronto’s experimental rockers Holy F*ck are playing two Irish dates at The Speakeasy in Belfast on Thursday 18 November and Whelan’s, Dublin on Friday 19 November. If opposites really do attract, it makes perfect sense that Holy F*ck would chose a barn in rural Ontario to record a series of dynamic electro-noise pop that compose their latest full-length release, titled Latin. Where Holy F*ck in the past were a rotating cast of musicians, Latin showcases for the first time their consistent touring line up. Drummer Matt Schulz and bass player Matt McQuaid provide a complex rhythm foundation. This provides the ideal underpinning as Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh merge a twin effects/feedback tangle.
Sweary’s favourite Lissie returns to the Academy main room, Dublin on Tuesday 7 December.
