Culchie Calling Cards – Gigs – October 11 – 17 2010
Sunday, October 10th, 2010GIGS
Jay Brannan is playing another Irish date as part of this almost world tour (The US, UK and Ireland). I guess he liked his last visit here. He plays Crawdaddy at Dublin’s Old Harcourt Station on October 16. As for his style, well he has an artistic crush on Sinead O’Connor.
Cork legends (sometimes for their music) Republic of Loose continue their four month live residency at the Academy, Dublin – one Friday each month from September through to December on Friday October 15th. These shows will be the band’s only Dublin gigs of 2010.
After returning from the States to open for U2 in Croke Park on their 360 tour in 2009, they spent the latter half of the year writing new material for their fourth album. In May 2010 Republic of Loose flew to Baltimore in the US to begin work on their forthcoming album. Recorded in Wrightway Studios with Steve Wright who had just finished working on the new UNKLE album, the fourth Republic of Loose album is scheduled for an early October release with the lead single pencilled in for September 17th. The album marks a new direction for the Loose with Mik Pyro describing the work as more up tempo and groove orientated. Currently they have a bunch of US Hip-Hop artists shouting out for them (and not just the Baltimore crews) so expect the republic to grow.
“The Nameless” is Cathy Davey’s third album and she is promoting it with an Irish wide tour. First signed by Parlophone’s Regal Recordings after a batch of home-recorded demos caused a bit of a stir, and played her first live date shortly thereafter. With time, as Cathy managed to wriggle out of the indie-rock role that Parlophone had given her. The Nameless has more of Cathy’s personality in it than any of her previous work. There’s a darkness here that is more prominent than before, but it’s coupled with songs as fine as anything she’s ever written. Lead single Little Red is the kind of song that could be adopted as a new national anthem. She’s brought back members of her band too: Conor J. O’Brien has returned to play some guitar and some drums, taking a break from recording his début album as Villagers (but no word yet if he’s on tour with her). The line up is:
Wednesday 13 October Savoy , Cork
Thursday 14 October Riverbank, Wexford
Friday 15 October Dolan’s, Limerick
Saturday 16 October Forum, Waterford
Clockwork Apple presents an evening of live music Upstairs in Whealan’s, Dublin on Friday 15 October at 8pm. The (amended) line-up is The Dirty 9s, The Blue Choir and The Cold 100.
The Dirty 9s have had Jim Lockheart (Horslips) and Manic Street Preachers producer Greg Haver work on their album “Stop Screaming, Start Dreaming” released last April, their single “Lucy Opus” was chosen as Today FM’s download of the day by Tony Fenton and has received further airplay nationally. The 5 piece were also hand picked to be part of the 2009 IMRO showcase and have a licensing deal with the US based company Uncommontrax, who provide music for TV & Film including the massive hits Twilight & Entourage.
The Blue Choir who are still busy after the success of debut EP (dubbed by Jim Carroll as “superb”) – “Get Ready For War” which snagged the band a place at Ireland’s newest festival Vantastival earlier on in the year.
Drafted in at the 11th hour, and taking to the stage first re the Dublin 4 piece The Cold 100 who played a raucous headline show in Academy 2 earlier this year.
Not a music gig, but a comedy gig. Colin Murphy (best know for guesting and later hosting The Panel) and Colm O’Regan are playing City Limits Comedy Club on Friday 15 October.
