Culch.ie is going to the Culchie Festival
Firstly, do you have any idea how hard it is for me to write the word Culchie without putting the dot in there? Anyway, that’s my problem, not yours.
This weekend is the annual Culchie Festival, now in its 21th year. Yes, I did type 21th. Their website may be full of typos and look like it was designed by a farmer, but that’s irrelevant – it’s going to be a weekend full of craic and mayhem. Taking place in Mohill, Co Leitrim, from October 22nd-24th the first search for Super Gran begins, along with events such as the Culchie Fashion Show and the annual Honda Step-Thru Run. Think Father Ted only non-fiction.
Culch.ie will be heading down over the weekend and, though Sinead would like me to try out for the King of the Culchies Competition, I’ll just be spectating. I may also have a drink or two before the Karaoke in Carroll’s Bar on Saturday.
This year the festival will also attempt to set a new Guinness World Record when top DJ Fergal Darcy from i102 radio in Galway will try and put on 250 pairs of underwear in one hour in ‘Meteor’s the most underpants put on in one hour challenge’. Fergal will aim to beat the record of 215 pairs currently held by a 10 year old American youngster.
Mohill’s most famous son, Padraic Og Gallagher, who runs Gallagher’s Boxty House restaurant in Dublin’s Temple bar since 1988, will be attempting a world record to create the largest-ever boiled boxty dumpling. The giant dish will contain 250 potatoes and take a whopping 36 hours to fully cook. The completed dumpling will weigh about 70kgs and measure one metre long and 0.5 metres wide. Yes, they’re all mad down there.
Commenting on the Culchie Festival, festival organiser Paddy Rock said, “We are delighted Meteor have come on board as sponsor to join in on the mighty craic the Culchie Festival has to offer. We have a brilliant weekend lined up for our special anniversary year with this being our 21st. On top of our record breaking attempts, the festival will also be looking to find Leitrim’s first Super Gran which will be MC’d by RTE’s Paddy O’Gorman. Other events include the selection of the Junior Culchie, the Culchie Cocktail Trail in local pubs, Kulchie Karaoke, the Culchie Fashion Show and Culchie Tug of War”.
We’ll be there, taking pictures and trying to get used to something they call ‘fresh air’. Who else is going down?
