Culch.ie’s Oxegen ’11 Soundtrack
It’s that time of year again. The full Oxegen 2011 line-up has been announced and you’ve got to make up your mind about whether you’re still young enough to enjoy dancing in a field and being covered in more muck than Babe. (A good indicator of youth is whether or not you remember Babe and if you don’t, piss off, we can’t afford to get any more frown lines glaring at you).
Coldplay, The Script, Arctic Monkeys, Paulo Nutini, Foo Fighters, The Black Eyed Peas…those are the ones your Ma could name if the music police had her over a barrel (not that we’d be making assertions about anyone having your Ma over a barrel, hot and all as she obviously is, sure didn’t she make you).
But if you’re not so young or cool (and we find those to be unlikely qualities in a Culch reader, but we guess it could happen) and the rest of the newly-released Oxegen 2011 line-up reads like the last will and testament of the ‘with it’ phase of your life, we’re here to help. We took note of all the band names at the line-up launch last night (as if, we twitpic’d the press release while eating a mini shepherds pie) and then we got hold of some bouncy teenagers and convinced them to tell us what they’re listening to at the moment by promising them grinds for the Junior Cert.
If you pronounce the 5 in Deadmau5 and don’t know it’s an ‘s’, if you think The National is a horse race, if you think Brandon Flowers delivered your last bouquet from Interflora, sit back, relax and check out our Top Ten(t) Tunes for 2011 because we’ve got you covered, Wrinkly.
10. Fleetwood – The Minutes
Cheat Sheet: Dublin band who’ve been around for the past five or six years. Debut album Markata is coming in May. They’re on the same label as Flapes and they won best band video at the IMTV awards in 2010.
9. Crazytown – Madisun
Cheat Sheet: Dublin band Madisun are a five-piece formed just six months ago. Hailing from UCD they’re not currently signed but they’ve caught MCD’s eye on the live scene.
8. Big Wave – Jenny and Johnny
Cheat Sheet: Jenny and Johnny were solo artists who met in LA in 2005 and did a bit of touring together here and there before eventually recording together in 2009. If you wanted to call it original pop, you’d be right.
7. One (Your Name) – Swedish House Mafia
Cheat Sheet: Swedish House Mafia are just the right amount of DJs. Axwell, Angello and Ingrosso premiered ‘One’ at the Ultra Music Festival in 2010. You don’t want to miss it at Oxegen ’11.
6. We Are From Venice – The Bloody Beetroots
Cheat Sheet: They really are from Venice.
5. Post Break-up Sex – The Vaccines
Cheat Sheet: London Indie-heads The Vaccines are releasing their debut album ‘What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?’ this month. Whenever anyone makes a comment during their Oxegen set, you should say ‘what did you expect from the Vaccines?’ It’ll be magic, people will high five you.
4. Dear Maria, Count Me In – All Time Low
Cheat Sheet: All Time Low took their name from the New Found Glory song ‘Head On Collision’. They’re from Baltimore and it’s worth getting hold of their back catalogue pre-Oxegen. So Wrong, It’s Right and Nothing Personal are both immense. Immense is a word that young people use.
3. End Credits – Chase & Status
Cheat Sheet: You’ll probably recognise Chase & Status tunes if you’re the type to go dancing at the disco. They’ve been in the UK Dance Chart 3 times with Hurt You, Pieces and Take Me Away all making number one. Plan B have been known to do vocals for them and Plan B are also playing Oxegen. Muse aloud to your friends that if the stars align and they hit the stage together they’ll ‘totally wreck it’. (Wrecking it is a good thing).
2. Strobe – Deadmau5
Cheat Sheet: Basically, it’s a guy who wears a big mouse head while he performs. He’s dead popular though. Go see!
1. Why So Sad? – Bipolar Empire
Cheat Sheet: 4-piece Bipolar Empire hail from Tallaght and formed at Oxegen ’07. They played the Hot Press stage last year. Pretend you were there.
Rinse and repeat and see you in Punchestown, young ‘un 😉
