Review: Spirit of Folk Festival 2013

spirit of folk 2013

Above image: Myself with organiser Martin Duffy, courtesy Brian Greene. Year 3, my third year at The Spirit of Folk Festival kicked off Saturday 22nd September and though it was only for 1 day and night, it was as always so very beautiful. It seems funny to want a passage of time to never end… and this year was no different. A bit like the happiest game of snakes and Ladders played within a Jamesless giant peach, it is a very beautiful thing to see a feeling turn into an event and watch it grow only then to ram it into a calculator and press the square root button. And then you realise that the #soF13 family could have asked me to come to the field with nothing but a tree under my left oxter and it would have been as beautiful, solely because of the people there. Now add … There’s more

Welcome: The Spirit of Folk, Festival 2013

spirit of folk 2011 (117)

This weekend sees the very much anticipated return of The Spirit of folk Festival 2013. Culch.ie has been and gone there since it began way back in 2011 and this it’s 3rd year is one I simply cannot wait for. I’ll grant you #SOF13 is probably not the type of gig where you’d spot that many fake tan pushers, complete with Gucci aftersahve flavoured Beckham Wellies, because I’m worth it ? More this gig really is about The Spirit of Folk. For me, for us, it is the place where myself and Brian Greene were made to feel part of The Family in 2011 as they aired on The Sodshow. And we had tea there. It is were Anthony McGuinness  and I first met The Hot Sprockets. It is were Darren and Ellie went shamanic drumming and Brian interviewed a viking. It is bring your own Germania beer, a hug … There’s more

Indiependence 2013 – Day 3

craft beer #indie13

Sunday, day 3 of #Indie13 started out grand. Indiependence didn’t bring me any coffee. And so I went into Mitchelstown for some a stroll and some intravenous strongest blend roast coffeine. Today however was a test of toughing it out as the heavens opened. Fair to say, no deluxe 10 euro pop up festival labelled tent was safe. Even my own 5000 hydrostatic head masterplan had a few drops come through. And though the place muddied and puddled and some ran for armageddon sake…. It was only a mere blip and really didn’t matter a dickie. To the music and one that was again missing from ‘the lists’ was Protobaby. I’d never heard of them before being honest. But I’d happily pay to see them play after this gig. Individually genius. Collective genii. Also nice to see was Hot Press editing their ‘who to meet’ list to include them. Alongside … There’s more

The Craft Collection Beer Hall @ Indie13

The Craft Collection Beer Hall, Indie13 (4)

In the middle of  Indiependence 2013, in the the middle of a farm shed sat The Craft Collection Beer Hall. To the left was The Craft Collection Stage and to the right, one mahooosive bar, complete with a flat screen tele where crowds crammed to watch the Dubs play.  Throw in some seating made from pallets, tables from old ESB coils, The Hot Sprockets on stage and some home made ping pong tables and you’ve a rough gist of what this place was like. It’s a bit mad, in a sense coz I’ve done the VIP gig at Electric Picnic and a little it seems like Oxegen13, that sort of thing is maybe on the down. That’s not a bad thing; but a taster of fine dining with a most suited beer was a real honour and something I had never done before. In shorts and a t-shirt. Having just … There’s more

Indiependence 2013 – Day 2

indiependence 2013 (82)

It’s takes a while when you hit a festival as niche as Indiependence to find your feet. Especially when you work for a living, are slightly beat from the night before and the weeks work leading up to it. But Day 2 was to be an absolute whopper. Being that the main arena stayed closed ’til around 12, I grabbed a coffee from the only place that sold them and headed off to Mitchelstown for a bite. I score very high in the who’s got any experience in the festival-ing department and highly recommended as always is a proper feed and the lovely lamb and spuds at The Hunters Rest [and a hat tip to the girl with the black hair who works there who was nothing but smiles]. On that note, I should also give a very high 5 to whoever runs the Super Valu there. I know 5,000 … There’s more

Indiependence 2013 – Day 1

indiependence 2013

I managed to squeeze a lot of audio into my microphone over the 3 days and fair to say it would be a little unfair to try and wedge all of that into one post. So I’m doing it in 3 parts. Also I’ve got Molson Canadian to thank for the tickets to #Indie13 and so you may hear them noted throughout. Either or, cheers lads. listen to ‘We are scientists. Indiependence ’ on Audioboo Re the band selection and who I chatted to decided to record ~ The deal was really simple. I didn’t read one ‘recommended to see’ list and carried the microphone when I could. If the mood struck me I recorded. As a fine example, I met Steve of Kodaline and we were both with friends. Fair is fair. I’ll get that chat the next time. Either or my love of music and the company I … There’s more

Competition: NYE Dublin – This is what you should be doing

NYE Dublin Festival 2011 concert

I am mad about New Year (far more than Christmas itself). I buy into the symbolism of it – out with the old and in with the new. So, I love to mark each one differently. This year, now that I’ve returned to city centre living, I’m embracing the New Year in Dublin. NYE Dublin, Dublin’s New Year’s Festival, marks the start of The Gathering Ireland 2013! To celebrate, we’re offering 5 pairs of tickets to the NYE Dublin Countdown Concert, featuring the delicious Imelda May and the brilliant Bell X1. Dublin’s New Year Festival is even bigger this year and now that I’m living in city centre, there will be no better place than Dublin’s city centre streets to celebrate the arrival of 2013. Even Lonely Planet has named Dublin as one of the Top 5 places in the world to spend New Year, so you don’t want to … There’s more

Spirit of Folk Festival 2012

As we come to the cold end of a very hectic year, a few of us are looking back over the highlight of our Summer season – anyone who has read culch regularly will know how much we loved Spirit of Folk. It’s a small festival with a big heart and, this year they managed to keep the same atmosphere and sense of community amongst the festival goers. Anto, Peter and Brian, who were there last year, were joined by Blots, Darren, Elly, Phillip and Sarah so this post will contain contributions from a few of us. A SOFF megapost if you will. Anto: I’d been in two minds about attending SOF last year. I didn’t know a lot about it and I wasn’t really up for a weekend of camping. In hindsight, I’m so glad I went and I’d been looking forward to the second year for months. This … There’s more

My Time At A Festival: Spirit of Folk 2012

I’m gonna have to start my look back on Spirit of Folk 2012 with this piece of audio that was a #soff12 Sodshow special. Textually, it really does save about 4 gizillion paragraphs of what if’s and Aimsir Modh Coinníollach‘s that we who were there in year one wondered about….. pre us getting there. Scroll to 5 mins 52 seconds: listen to ‘A Spirit of Folk Festival 2012 Special ’ on Audioboo Of the gig, the festival, my time there it’s tough to pick highlights. There were gigs and bands and people I heard talk; things I saw and people I met and by the time I realised that I should have recorded that in audio or in picture, that moment was gone and passed. It was that good and so very easy to simply get lost in time. Class example: Bunoscionn doing Trad Side of the Moon – yup, … There’s more
