MUZU.TV is looking for the brightest and boldest personalities to front their upcoming series of online music shows. In total there will be 5 flagship programs recorded and developed in the studio at MUZU’s Dublin office. They will include music news platforms, review sections, performance and interview pieces from international acts as well as home grown talent – all streamed across the globe.

I rang the lads in MUZU for a chat when this one popped up on my radar. I was trying to get to the crux of the matter…. y’know the what and who type of person are you looking for. They directed me to the place where one uploads their video’s.

I like this one: Presenter Search – val and kate and it will give you a rough gist of what they are looking for. But as the Muzu guys also explained…. if a Britney Spears look a like was reviewing a death metal concert…. there could be trouble. Personally, I don’t see any arguments in there if it was done the other way round.

Anyhow, point is if you are 18 or 180. If you are into ACDC or ABC. Whether you are male or female or you simply believe you have a face for TV…. I honestly couldn’t see a better way to get some form of footing in there. I’d also reckon it’d be pretty good fun.

Storyland 2: The final

Have you been watching Storyland?

Do you know what it is, come to that?

For the uninitiated, Storyland is an RTÉ project where filmmakers produce web-based shows and the public get to vote in the online poll for their favourite. Each round, the show with the least number of votes has to wrap up production while the survivors get to make another episode. It’s a bit like a talent contest in the vein of X-Factor or Over the Rainbow, but there’s isn’t a B-list celeb judge in sight (and for that we heart you, Storyland).

It’s season 2 (or Storyland 2) at the moment and nearly the end of Storyland 2 at that (voting finishes tomorrow) so if you haven’t been watching, get on over to http://www.rte.ie/storyland/ and catch yourself up.

They’re down to the final two at the moment, Zombie Bashers vs We Own The Streets. We like the look of We Own The Streets ourselves, not that we’d try to be online influencers or anything. Have a look and decide for yourself and take a look at the shows that have been knocked out already …there’s good watchin’ in them there hills.

I’m off to see if I can get rid of the invented Storyland jingle that’s lodged itself in my brain (story wonder la-hand to the tune of Boogie Wonderland. Sigh).

A bit more Iron Man

What would happen if you played about with movies. A YouTube user called Reubenpac played about with the 3D modelling tool Maya and added a little extra to a few movies.

True that he is a talented animator, but he is essentially an amateur playing about with the concept.

In this case the concept is adding Iron Man to other movies. Which completely changes the tone of the movies.

Just a bit of fun. But I’m waiting for a version of this to show up in the MTV Movie Awards. And give it a few years and school kids will be making Avatar-level work. Or integrating Iron Man or Toy Story characters in Avatar.

Five Years Time

The radio told me so it must be true…YouTube is five years old this year. The source of the answer to ‘what way did that one go again?’ and the balm for all nostalgic urges to watch retro tv and old ads from when we were young as well as the provider of many a decent bit of knowledge (it has a tutorial on how to open beer bottles with paper no less) has only been around since 2005.

And guess what it used to look like?

Wow...boring

Dramatic I may be, but I don’t know what I did before YouTube. Oh no wait…remember enhanced CDs? When you could stick it in the computer and watch the music video from disk? Ret-ro, my friends. That’s how I learned the Baby One More Time dance routine in 1999 on my friend’s Windows ’95 Compaq PC.

YouTube has brought me the entire Goodnight Sweetheart collection, that Old Spice ad, all six episodes of David O’Doherty’s Modest Adventures of David O’Doherty and the Captain Planet episode set in Belfast. It has introduced me to keyboard cat, made possible the phenomenon of Rick Rolling and facilitated the learning of many a dubiously-imitated dance routine. It was the motivation for an entire show with Barry Murphy and David O’Doherty at last year’s Cat Laughs comedy festival in Kilkenny (Messin’ With YouTube).

And yet folks…I never got it. Now, many tv channels have their own YouTube channel and provide their content via the site but back in the day, the content was user-generated. While appreciating it immensely, I’ve never understood the do-gooder nature of spending time uploading tv shows, ads, cartoons and other glorious miscellany. If you’d told me in 2004 that it would be a success I would’ve said ‘nah, doubt it. Relies too much on people’.

I eat my words. It worked out. It’s rescued many an hour from boredom and caused many more to be lost in ill-advised procrastination. To YouTube, five years on.

Boobies – woohoo!

It’s a site for men. It’s a site for Irish men. It’s a site for Irish men who like boobs.

Well, so they say. It’s actually a lot more than that. Boob.ie is an online magazine for Irish men who like idle titillation mixed in with some very funny articles about cars, sports, movies, games, gadgets, TV and, yes, even fashion. In a matter of months, it has become Ireland’s most popular men’s website and this is down to solid steering by the site’s creators, Maxi Cane and Ham Solo.

Maxi Cane: Boob.ie editor and self proclaimed comedy genius. Don’t take him home to yer ma, cos he’ll do her. Twice.

Ham Solo: Webmaster Extraordinaire. Sometime Sock Puppeteer.

Get started with some great retro movie reviews: Donnie Darko, The Matrix. Check out the gadgets section and move on to some Friday funk from Paloma Faith and Goldfrapp before you ease into the hilarious Crudely Drawn Sex. Then, if you’re at home, if you’re alone, if you’re prepared for it, check out the girls. The ‘real girls‘ section is particularly interesting as we might even know some of the boobies on display.

There’s plenty more to the site – it’s often crude, often vulgar, but always fun and occasionally very clever. Keep an eye on Boob.ie and watch it grow. It’s only going to go on to bigger and better things.

The Movie Meme – Ten Movie Facts About Me…

I can’t remember the last time I did one of these. Young Niall over on the excellent Scannain.com tagged me in a meme. I have to provide ten movie based pieces of trivia about me. Easy enough, methinks.

1. I’ll start off with a simple one. It’s no secret that my favourite movie of all time is Grosse Pointe Blank. I watch it time and time again and never get tired of it. The one liners, the incredible soundtrack and John Cusack at his best. In fact, I want to be Martin Blank.

2. I remember the day we first got a VCR player and we opened up our first account in the video shop. Our membership number was 161 and the first two movies I rented were Gremlins and The Neverending Story.

3. I have been collecting Empire movie magazine for almost 15 years, although everything prior to 2001 was thrown out. Grrr!!!

4. Though I’m a huge fan of all genres, I have a particular penchant for horror. And I love all the sub-genres – the slashers, the sci-fi, the psychological and supernatural, the torture porn, but, strangely, the horror movie I’ve watched more than any other is the light and fluffy Tremors.

5. I have never seen Apocalypse Now.

6. I adore Bette Davis. The Divine Feud, the story of her and Joan Crawford’s near-lifelong hatred of each other, is my favourite non-fiction book.

7. I love the Oscars. I know it’s steeped it stupid politics, I know the truly best films rarely win, I know it’s an overly decadent backslapping night for rich people…but I love every ounce of it. I stayed up all night to watch this year’s Oscars (on my own!!).

8. I love Disney films (as my Disney post proves).

9. I have cried at movies. My Girl, The Notebook, It’s a Wonderful Life and Finding Neverland made me cry. There may be others……There definitely are others.

10. I met Johnny Depp.

As this is a meme, it needs to be spread among the masses. So, I want to know more about Sean Earley’s movie history. I think Mr Foley might have a few tidbits to share. How about Miss Sharon? I wonder if Gaff and O’Brien would be up for it. And lastly, let me open it up to all the Culch.ie writers. Tell us a bit about you and movies.

The TV Theme Medley…

I came across this randomly and thought I’d post it here. If you love TV theme tunes you’ll love this.

A guy, Fredrik Larsson, does a mash-up type medley of great sig tunes from Cheers to True Blood and everything in between. It’s both sappy and impressive in equal measure! Very tight musicianship all the same in a simple yet nicely realised video. What’s the point? There is no point. Still it’s enjoyable. And it’s cool that it’s the same guy playing on either side, if that makes sense.

Screw the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the IFTAs and the Meteors; for Irish bloggers, there truly is only one awards night – for Irish bloggers, there is no better night out than the Irish Blog Awards.

It’s the one night of the year where online meets offline, where the real and the fantasy collide in a cornucopian sea of bliss. Am I overselling it? No, I’m not. This is one damn fun night out.

Just a year after its inception, Culch.ie is very very proud to be nominated in the Best Pop Culture category. We would like to thank those who nominated us in the first place and put us on the long list. We would like to thank the judges for being so kind to take us this far. We would like to thank the category sponsor, Insure.ie. Yesterday saw the release of the nominees for the second annual Streamys. For those of you unfamiliar with the awards they celebrate the best in online television and videos.

Last year saw some high profile shows, such as personal fave Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, awarded for their greatness and this year is no different. If for no other reason the award nominees are worth checking out for the sheer calibre of online television that you may have missed. I’m a big fan of The Guild myself.

Pete Warden has an interesting visualisation of Facebook data he’s scraped and analysed. Allowing for the limitations of the publicly available data he’s crunched, it’s still fascinating to see how localised supposedly borderless networks can be.
