What’s Going On Your Summer Soundtrack?

Doubtless it’ll be pissing rain by the time you lot read this, but this post came to me when it was sunny and the wind was coming on little teasing tufts of Gawd’s benevolent breath, or something. I was walking along Suburbia Street, considering playlists (I’m due to draft one up for a friend who’s so indie, he listens to bands whose frontmen haven’t been conceived yet, and so on and so forth, as the cliche goes), enjoying the weather, and thinking about summer. It’s on the way, you know. You can tell because the indie brats have stopped wearing socks outside their tights. And so, with playlists and dandelion wishes in the air, I thought you might like to get in the mood by nominating some nice, summertime songs for me? I can start you off, because there’s a couple of lovelies in the pipeline/my ear canals that you should know about.

Firstly, you can now get Johnny Flynn’s new song Kentucky Pill free – free! – from his website, and you should do and all, because who hasn’t wondered what the result would be if The Best Looking Boy In The School suddenly broke into sean nós on a beach in Antigua? Honest to God. This is some seriously pretty, sprightly wordplay … dressed in a Hawaiian shirt. Kentucky Pill is from Johnny’s new album, Been Listening, which is due on June 7th, which will be An Event if this jauntily gorgeous snippet is any indication of quality … and the song’s not bad either. Hoho! Perversion is hilarious. Anyway, Zane Lowe has already copped on to this one, giving it his Hottest Record nod a couple of weeks ago. And quite rightly. This is the best freebie since sea air, which, if you don’t live near the sea, I can bottle for you for a nominal fee.

I also plan to be giving my ears over to Lightspeed Champion‘s custody this summer. New album, Life Is Sweet! Pleased To Meet You was released a couple of months back, but with singles like Madame Van Damme (released May 7th) bouncing about the place just in time for the annual break in the clouds, this is all set to be me n’ Dev’s summer.

Dev has also been kind enough to provide us with a body of work to read during the upcoming silly season. As well as making albums and rather ridiculous videos, he’s gamely struggling through watching imdb’s 100 Worst Movies, an endearingly daft endeavour which he blogs about here.

So there’ll be lots of Johnny Flynn, lots of Lightspeed Champion, possibly endless replays of Super Extra Bonus Party’s “Comets” and Frightened Rabbits’ “Living In Colour”, and Pimms on the motherfuppin’ lawn. But what of you lot? What’s going on your summertime playlist? What sounds do you intend to be chillin’ to whilst bakin’ on the deckin’? Or, at the very least, what’s going to console your eardrums while you’re tasting the leak in your double-glazing with your nose pressed plaintively to the inside of the glass? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a culch.ie summer soundtrack on the go by the time school’s out?

Well, Vampire Weekend will be on my summer playlist because they’re the ultimate summer band for me. The Dead Weather’s new album due out May 11th will be on heavy rotation for me too.

In preparation for my sojourn to the Isle of Wight festival I’ll be getting in my Strokes mode too 🙂 (new album from them out sometime in september)

Any particularly summery tracks from either Vampire Weekend or Dead Weather, Sean? You know, the kind that makes you less self-conscious about wearing shorts. 😉

Isle Of Wight, eh? Jealous? Me? Well, just a little.

    Here’s ten classics.

Common – Come close (Electric circus)
    Nightmares on wax – Morse
Foxy Brown – Letter to the Firm
Shuggie Otis – Strawberry Letter 23
Nas feat Lauryn Hill – If I Ruled The World
Nu Yorican Soul – The Nervous Track
Nu Yorican Soul – The Black Gold of the Sun
The Fresh Prince – Summertime, still does it for me!
Roy Ayers – Everybody Loves The Sunshine
The Roots – You got me

  4. Sweary says:

    Aw, classic!

I’ll be giving an ear to all of these, Mr. John. In your debt, I am!

I’d also like to add Slow Club’s “Giving Up On Love” to my list. Good clean fun!

4min 50 seconds shakes me to the core.
The album “I and love and you” is just wowza.
In other news, I was also thinking maybe a bit of Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeroes – “Janglin”. A great new find of mine.
    Eddie Vedder ~ Hard Sun
Etta James ~ In the basement
Miike Snow ~ Black & Blue, Animal
Frightened Rabbit ~ The modern leper
    Not squares ~ Asylum

I feel as though i should stop here im afraid as my procrastination habit could get out of hand. 😉

  6. Sweary says:

The Modern Leper? Really? Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore that song – ADORE it – but is it a bit rawk/plaintive for chillin’ in the garden? I’d be karaoke-ing on my knees, the the top of my lungs, I would.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions … I have a lot to catch up with!
